Aldi has confirmed the opening date of its brand new store in Oldham, which will open its doors to customers just in time for the Christmas rush.

The new supermarket, on Lydia Becker Way in Chadderton, will open to the public at 8am on Thursday, December 7. Hockey star and Team GB bronze medallist Sarah Jones will be cutting the ribbon and the first 30 customers in the queue will be given a complimentary bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The store, located at Broadway Green, will be open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

Aldi, which was named the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket for 2022 by consumer group Which?, said the new supermarket will offer fresh, British meat products with weekly offers, Aldi’s award-winning ‘Specially Selected’ range, exclusive Beers, Wines and Spirits, and a ‘Food to Go’ section at the front of the store. Specialbuys will also be available in the middle aisle every Thursday and Sunday.

The new store will be run by Store Manager Tessa Atkinson, along with a team of 30 new colleagues. Ms Atkinson said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Chadderton. It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Sarah Jones join us will make it a morning to remember.”

Planning for the new store was approved at the end of last year after councillors previously threw the plans out saying they wanted to hold out for ‘high quality’ jobs on the site.

The new supermarket is the second Aldi to open in the borough ahead of Christmas. A new store on Lees Road in Oldham opened on October 26

The openings form part of Aldi’s long-term target of 1,500 stores in the UK – with the supermarket set to invest £1.4 billion on expanding its UK footprint over the next two years alone.

Aldi said each new store opening will create around 40 new jobs on average, boosting employment opportunities within local areas. Store assistants receive starting pay of £11.40 per hour outside London, while it is the only supermarket to pay for breaks, which can be worth up to £972 a year.

The new Aldi store in Chadderton is also calling on local charities and food banks to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community, the retailer said. Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week.
