A major road in Tameside is closed this evening (November 20) after a pedestrian was struck by a car, police have confirmed.

Manchester Road in Audenshaw is currently shut. The closure is in place around the Snipe Retail Park.

Buses are also being diverted due to the closure. Stagecoach said: "Routes 7/216. Due to a Police incident on Manchester Road outside Snipe, services heading to Manchester are diverting via Moss Way, Audenshaw Road, Ashton Hill Lane, Market Street and resume at Droylsden. Stops on Manchester Road from Snipe to Droylsden will not be served.

Police have since confirmed that the collision took place at around 6pm and the extent of the victim's injuries are unknown. Cops are urging drivers to find an alternative route.

Full statement from the fire service

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 6.30pm (on Monday, 20 November), one fire engine from Ashton was called to attend a road traffic collision between a car and a person on Manchester Road, Audenshaw.

“Our crews arrived quickly at the scene and worked with North West Ambulance to make the area safe before departing after approximately 20 minutes. One person was conveyed to hospital by NWAS paramedics.”

Delays around incident not too severe

Traffic data shows there is some congestion immediately around the area closed, but it does not stratch beyond the junction of Manchester Road and Lord Sheldon Way. The M60 is clear in the area for anyone hoping to travel on the eastern side of Greater Manchester tonight.

Statement from police

We have a full statement from the police on this incident. It says: "Greater Manchester Police are currently responding to a road traffic collision believed to be involving a car and pedestrian at around 6pm today (Monday 20 November 2023) on Manchester Road in Audenshaw, Tameside.


"Enquiries are ongoing at this time to determine the extent of the injuries sustained, with other emergency services at the scene to provide further specialist support and treatment.

"As a result, road closures are expected to continue, and drivers are asked to find alternative routes this evening."
