When it comes to Premier League clubs most adversely affected by Everton's points deduction, Manchester United were probably a fair way down the list.

However, being the first opponents to face the Toffees after the Premier League's sanctions is a clear hindrance for the Reds. A raucous crowd protesting against the treatment they have received, coupled with the Everton players' desperation to rack up points as quickly as possible, is a melting pot for disaster if United are not in the right mindset.

Sunday's clash is likely to transcend into a cup final feel and the Reds need to be ready for this intensity. To the home supporters, players and staff, this will mean more than games which have come before.

Fortunately for United, Erik ten Hag has faith his team can rise to the challenge. "All games are very important, but our away record this season so far is very good," Ten Hag explained as he previewed this weekend's game. "We can take confidence and strong belief into those games.

"You could see that this team has personality and character in hostile environments, like in Copenhagen. We deal with it. I feel quite comfortable [away from home]."

He later added: "That’s definitely the case [Everton will be fired up]. You have to take it like it is but of course, they get more fuel but that can also work against them.

"But it’s not about that, it’s about us. We have to focus on the game and our way of playing. We have to make sure we are ready and we start the game with the right attitude. It’s always about a winning attitude."

Sadly while Ten Hag has confidence in his side's ability to handle the pressure, the stats don't lie. When this team enters hostile environments, the outcomes are rarely good this season.

United have lost two out of their five Premier League matches away from home, against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. In the Champions League they lost in front of a packed house in Munich and had two lapses of concentration which cost them dearly in Copenhagen.

While they may have picked up some solid victories on the road this season, 'intimidating' atmospheres have got the better of them. United's players must now repay the faith which Ten Hag has in their individual mentality and prove their doubters wrong in what will be another test of their mettle.
