Investigations are continuing at the scene of a house explosion in New Mills with 14 homes still evacuated.

A huge emergency services response was scrambled to the explosion at a bungalow on Ollersett Avenue in the Derbyshire town, near Stockport, at around 8am yesterday (November 14). Residents woke to their street 'shaking' as a number of properties on the street were evacuated.

A man - believed to be aged in his 70s - was airlifted to hospital. His current condition has not been revealed at this stage.

Eyewitnesses described how he had been 'dragged' out of the wreckage by neighbours. In an update issued this morning (Wednesday), a spokesperson for the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation remains underway at the scene, with the cause still being probed.

14 properties remain evacuated with residents 'unable to return at present'. A cordon is still in place on the street as emergency services work within the area.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire fire service said: "A cordon remains in place this morning following an explosion at a bungalow on Ollersett Avenue, New Mills, yesterday morning. Fire crews from New Mills continue to work with partners on the scene and occupants within 14 properties remain unable to return to their properties at present.

"The exact cause of the explosion is still being investigated. No further information is available."

A press conference yesterday afternoon heard that the circumstances of the explosion are not thought to be suspicious. Residents who were evacuated were asked to attend New Mills Leisure Centre.

East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called out to a 'medical emergency' at 8.10am. A spokesperson added: "We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, two crewed ambulances and the air ambulance was also in attendance.

"One patient was transported to Sheffield Northern General Hospital via air ambulance."
