I've loved a good Indian curry for as long as I can remember, but there's a place in Salford that has turned the concept on its head.

Believing that your typical Indian restaurants are somewhat outdated, with 'too many generic dishes', Mrs A's Kitchen set out to 'reinvigorate how food from the Indian subcontinent is served'.

Hailing from Bangladesh, but arriving in Salford in the 1980s, Mrs A, whose full name is Jahanara Ahmed, raised her five children in the city and decided to turn her love of cooking into a business.

In 2019, Mrs A's Kitchen was born, opening inside the former Salford Advertiser offices on the corner of Church Street and John William Street, in Eccles.

When my friend suggested we give the place a go for takeaway curry night, I have to admit, I was a little perturbed.

I'm not the most adventurous eater and had never ventured too far from my favourite tikka masala, so when she described it as 'not your typical curry' I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

You can choose from a range of specials every day. With the Lamb Garam Garam coming with its own 'not for the faint hearted' heat warning, we chose some milder options to share between the four of us.

The Beef Lal Zal, £9.45, went down a treat, as did the Kachchi Beef Biryani, which was a little pricier at £12.95, but arrived in its own clay pot which you get to keep.

But the one we were all fighting over was the Chicken Makhan, again £9.45. The creamy, buttery, nutty dish is full of flavour and the absence of anything too spicy is why Shohan Mohammed, Mrs A's nephew who now manages the place after she retired, believes it's the most popular thing on the menu right now.

"A lot of people don't like spice and this one is very mild, which is why I think it sells well," he said. "We don't use any spice at all in it."

He added: "I would say around 99% of our items are traditional Bengali foods. We have some others to meet customer demand, but it's mostly all food from Bangladesh and recipes from my auntie."

The Signature Chona, £5.95, was another takeaway treat for us, adding a little kick to proceedings. Spicy chickpeas served with a rainbow salad is not something I'd typically eat alongside a curry, but like I said, this is Mrs A's, they do things differently here and it's another traditional Bengali favourite.

But don't just take my word for how tasty this place is. It has a 4.7 star rating on Google where more than 200 customers have left mostly raving reviews, including those who have eaten inside the colourful restaurant, which features its very own tuk tuk bike.

"This is hands down the best Bangladeshi restaurant I’ve been to," said one. "Most Bangladeshi restaurants are presented as Indian restaurants - felt so good walking in and seeing the representation of our country.

"The food was very good and reasonably priced. The cooking is not like other 'Indian restaurants', it's very good . Anyone from Bangladesh will surely appreciate the food. Highly recommend."

"This is excellent Bangladeshi food," said another. "Is it like food from your local Indian? Absolutely not! It's much better, with very distinct delicious flavours."

And a third said: "Best Bangladeshi food in United Kingdom. Food was really delicious."

Mrs A's opens 5pm to 9.30pm Monday to Thursday and from 12pm to 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday. It offers free delivery within a two-mile radius if you spend over £20, but will deliver further afield with the fee depending on distance and amount ordered.
